How to Make a Protective Cellphone Cosy

You would have seen one of these in my Autumn Crafty Goodness post.

I've since had orders from family to make a few more, apparently my toddler isn't the only drooling baby who likes to pinch phones!

The good thing about these cosies is that because they have absorbency and waterproofing they help to protect your phone from those occasional wet accidents. Like a water-bottle leaking through your bag, or getting caught in a down-pour with your phone in your pocket.

So, here's a quick tutorial on how to make your very own protective cellphone cosy.

You will need:

1x fabric piece for the outer (such as cotton)
1x absorbent piece for the inner (such as an old cloth nappy, towelling or microfibre)
1x PUL piece for the waterproof inner
1x snap set

First up, to find out how big your fabric pieces need to be, measure your cellphone - mine is 5cm by 11cm and 1cm thick.

Add 4cm to the width and 18cm to the length. If your phone is thicker than 2cm, you will need to add another 1cm to the width.

My fabric pieces will need to be 9cm x 29cm.

Cut out your fabric pieces to the dimensions you worked out above.

Lay your outer piece down right side up.

Lay the PUL on top of the outer piece right side down.

Lay the absorbent piece on top of the two. Make sure the edges of all 3 line up nicely. You can pin into place if you wish.

Sew around the edge of the pieces using a 1/4" seam. Start sewing on a long side and leave a gap at the end to turn.

Clip the corners.

Turn inside out so the the right sides are showing - the absorbent piece should be in the middle.

Iron flat - make sure you only iron the cotton side and don't have it too hot or the PUL will melt!

Fold up the length to just over halfway, pin into place. This will create the pocket your phone will sit in.

Top-stitch around the three edges (don't top-stitch across the bottom), start at the bottom of the pocket and ensure the gap is closed at the top.

Pop your phone into the cosy and find where you'd like to attach the snap pieces, mark with a pin or fabric marker.

Attach the snap pieces and your done.

Autumn Crafty Goodness

We've been waking up to cooler, sometimes chilly mornings...autumn sure is here and winter isn't far off following. The crochet inspiration has hit me again so while I wait *patiently* for this baby to arrive I've been keeping busy making up some new woolly hats for my girls.

There have been more hats but I haven't gotten around to photographing them yet.

Oh, and the Huhu#2 blankie is finally finished! As you can see, it is rather large.

I recently had to buy a new cellphone as Miss Poppet kept sneakily pinching my old one and used it as a teether. Eventually, after all the drool and numerous hotwater cupboard visits it packed it in and wouldn't stayed turned on. For my new phone, I've made a snazzy little cellphone cosy which has a waterproof lining and some absorbency sewn into it. It's come in handy already and saved my new phone from getting mysteriously wet, this time just the cosy paid a visit to the hotwater cupboard!

You'll notice a few random photo posts of Miss Poppet today. They were ones I had taken on my mobile and couldn't get them off any other way. She had drooled all over it and most of the buttons have stopped working (not to mention the other random things it does) and it is almost impossible to use anymore. On a brighter note, it was a good excuse to buy a new cellphone! I'm loving it too. Note to self: Keep it up high, waaay higher than what you think she can reach because it WILL get pinched and drooled on.

Cloth bums - Yup, I'm obsessed with cloth nappies. The new itti bitti prints are devine, this is my fav, so lush and reminds me of a peacock.

Re-discovering nature through my daughter's eyes - everything is fascinating to her. I often find myself inspecting what she is so interested in to see if I can find what might have caught her attention.

My button jar - there's a bit of nostalgia here. My Grandmother had a button jar, I use to love sorting through it and finding the buttons that 'called' to me and collected them up and organised them into little containers. It was one of my favourite things to do at Grandma's house (how simple is that?) Even her kids remember doing the same thing! Recently, she got me my own button jar so I can start a collection.

Family outings - we're off to the zoo tomorrow, I'm really looking forward to it. I'll probably update this post with a pic later.

And just now, I found Miss Poppet walking around with her potty seat over her head, it made me smile. (By the way, it's brand new and hasn't been used on the toilet yet).

New layout for a new year

OK, so it's well past the new year but it's better late than never! I've just discovered the new template designer in blogspot - I knew it was there but hadn't had a look at it...it's very flash by the way. It would make it easy for those who were new to blogging to customise their blog without having to know much about computers or the workings of html/css. Makes my tutorial on changing your blog background redundant really :P

Anyway, enjoy the change of scene - it is still pink and girly (I'm not a pink kinda girl really!) but I've removed a lot of the images so it should hopefully be faster to load. Maybe next year I could branch out and do a massive colour change.

Room for Baby

So this is slightly embarrassing... Here's a pic of baby's room before we cleaned it out - it had been my sewing room for a while, as well as a dumping ground for odds and ends and things we needed to get out of Miss Poppet's reach.

We've since tidied it up and moved in the cot and dresser (which is now full of nice clean baby clothes:))

It seems a little bit bare though! I'm sure we had way more stuff for Miss Poppet. Once baby is born I think we shall be getting another canvas painting done by Kellie Watson - here's the one she did for Miss Poppet, gorgeous isn't it?

And here's a bump pic too - 35 weeks and 2 days! Not long to go now.... yes I'm feeling massive, yes I'm sure it's not twins (and if I get asked that one more time I'll probably loose it) and yes, baby does have a lot more growing to do and will probably be bigger than Miss Poppet at birth. And perhaps I'm proud that I can grow nice big, healthy babies.

Crochet Bug...

I think this time around my 'nesting instinct' isn't for cleaning, it's for all things crafty! I have many many sewing and crochet projects I want to do, perhaps because I know any 'me' time after Huhu #2 is born will be a looong time in coming around again.

I seem to have the crochet urge at the moment. I really really want to start on a few things for my Pay it Forward ladies and start another project for a local craft event BUT I know all my efforts should be put into finishing of Huhu #2's baby blanket.

It's coming along nicely though don't you think?

The only problem is that I somehow made it way too wide, even though I measured out the starting chain against Miss Poppet's blanket. By the time I realised, it was a bit too late to start again. It actually would make a good blanket for our queen-size bed if I had enough wool! This one will have to have the stripes running vertically which will be a bit strange but oh well. I'm still trying to figure out if I can fix it so it looks a bit nicer - any suggestions would be welcome!

And here is Miss Poppet's blankie, I never actually took any photos when I first finished it.

The most delish cookie!!

mmmm, these cookies are certainly moreish. They are the kind which are a little bit crispy on the outside edges but chewy in the middle....... nom nom nom!

I've modified a recipe I found on GOOP called Tate's Chocolate Chip Cookies as I found the original too sickly and I think the vanilla gave the cookie an odd taste.

So here we go:

Delish Choc-Chip Cookies - makes about 40 cookies (I get 36)

Ingredients
200g butter (room temperature)
1/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
2 eggs
1 tsp water
1/2 tsp vanilla essence
2 cups plain flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup white choc buttons (or white choc chips if you can get them)
1 cup dark choc chips or drops

Method
Preheat your oven.

Cream the butter then add the sugars and cream again. Add the eggs, water and vanilla essence. Mix well until the mixture combines.

Sift in the flour, baking soda and salt. Mix until only just combined (a bit like muffins).

Fold in the chocolate pieces.

Using two teaspoons, put teaspoonful lots onto a baking tray lined with baking paper. Leave about 3-4cm between each cookie as they spread a lot.

Bake for 8-12 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. I'd check them after 8, 10 and 12 minutes. You are aiming for browned edges around the cookie with the middle cooked but still pale. When you notice this take them out of the oven and leave them to cool for a few minutes as they firm up after cooling. Try to resist taste-testing right now as (I learnt the hard way) they'll probably burn your tongue and fall apart.

Also, just a note on ovens....I took aaages to figure out mine and found that the for best cookie cooking, have the oven on Fan Bake at about 170 and then using a rack closer to the top of the oven (like in the top quarter). Your oven may be different but that's what I've found works best for me.

When they've cooled you can stack them up to store them in an airtight container.

Well, I'm now 30 weeks pregnant, only 10 weeks to go!!! I must admit, the time has just been flying by and I'm procrastinating a bit. We still need to clean out the spare room for baby, which currently is filled with all our crap we don't have room for elsewhere (the question is, where do we put it?) Sort through bags and bags of clothes, get out the bassinet and other baby things and most importantly finish of baby's blanket! This is where I'm at with it, still a bit to do yet, luckily all the new season TV shows are starting up so I'll be able to crochet away while watching TV.

My daughter has an obsession with our cat Hendrix at the moment. He's quite a chilled out cat and I feel a bit sorry for him as she's constantly chasing him trying to rub her face with his tail. He's a fluffy kinda cat so I guess it must feel tickly and nice to her.

I'm waiting for when it ends in tears. Hendrix has a tendancy to roll over belly up and trust me, that belly-fur is pretty tempting to give it big rub but we are always having to yell at unsuspecting new visitors from across the room - "DON'T TOUCH HIS BELLY!" Lightning quick, his natural hunting instincts come out and he'll sink his claws into your arm and ruck for his life.

So you see, I am dreading the day when my back is turned and Lena decides to put her face into that inviting belly full of fur. Getting to the point of the story now, obsession with cats = some sewing fun creating some cuddly cats without claws :0)

Speaking of my little one, she has completely wowed me again the last couple of days. It seems that she'll go ages just cruising along doing her thing, then out of the blue she'll do several new things at once! She's just started to make some animal noises (other than a monkey) and picked up 6 signs which has made communicating with her much easier. So she now she can sign milk, yes, no, finished, drink, hungry, bath, more and fly (as in the pest, we have a terrible invasion this summer). Back to studying the sign language dictionary for us then, we need to learn some more to teach her, well worth it so far!

A couple of weeks before Christmas, we went to see the lovely Bridget again for some more family photos. We put a lot of thought and careful planning into this photo session as the one when Miss Poppet was 3 months old didn't turn out so well, even though we still got some nice shots. At least she sleeps in the car now! So we planned Miss Poppet's nap for the hour drive, plus 20 minutes for a snack and to wake up cos she is like her mummy and is a bit of a grump pot after a sleep. Sorted.

On the day it was all fine until we got into the studio. Needless to say, when you would love for your kids to co-operate they don't. There were tears and tantrums, lots of grizzling and a toddler who wouldn't sit still. But WOW. Bridget is good at what she does and we got these shots....

Christmas and Summer Fun

Well, the holidays are nearly over, time to get back into the routine and back to reality. Christmas day was quite eventful for us. Four different homes (including ours), a flat battery 20 minutes up the coast, forgotten presents left at home under the tree (pregnesia hits again) and keys dropped down a stormwater drain.

I will say the only downside were the chaps who we asked for a jump lacking some Christmas spirit. Sure they tried to help, but it seemed like the biggest inconvenience to them and were worried they were going to blow up their car's computer chip. For goodness sake, if you're going to jump a car do it right and give it a good rev! They might have just said no straight up and saved us some time in calling in Grandma to rescue.

On the plus side, most of these things were fixed without too much hassle and Miss Poppet got a good nap while we were waiting up the coast for a jump.

Two christmas dinners, a pudding, a pav and some backyard cricket later it was time to take her hoard of presents home. I would have thought after such a busy she would have crashed but no, a sugar-high was in full force and she didn't seem ready for bed until about 8.30pm, finally giving us some peace. Long-gone are the lazy Christmas afternoons of leftovers and naps.

For our short summer break we spent some time at the family bach. We had a lot of beautiful stunning days but it was also devilishly hot!

If you are ever over in Waihi Beach, check out The Secret Garden. They've just opened up a coffee bar in their backyard and it is a gorgeous spot. Great coffee, quite relaxing, lots of shade and loads of character.

Miss Poppet had a blast, we took her for lots of rides on her bike and she's quickly following in her Uncle Corky's footsteps and is obsessed with birds.

She also discovered that yummy food comes in packets and bright boxes and is kept up on the bench out of her reach. We are normally pretty good with not giving her junk food but we figured it was the holidays, plus we were also eating it so it would be rather unfair to eat such things in front of her. We did get a little bit deceptive though, and placed a bowl of fresh fruit up on the bench, all those yummy apricots, nectarines, cherries and bananas went down a treat too!

A Digital-Scrapbooking How-To

With a digital age comes digital-scrapbooking, also fondly known as digi-scrappin'

Finally, I thought I should do a post on how-to start a digital scrap page. I keep getting asked by friends how I do my pages and I end up sending them links on some tutorials, etc, but every time I have to go back and find all the links again!

This isn't a tutorial as such but more a place where you can find the information on how to go about it. It should be enough to get you started at least, I used all this, mucked around a bit in Photoshop and it didn't take long to learn and once you know how, it's easy :0)

Let's go....

1. Decide what program to use.
Once you've decided, learn how to use it! Knowing how to use your program and it's features really takes your digi-scrappin' up a notch.

Some popular programs are: Photoshop Elements (designed for digital-scrapbooking), Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro and GIMP.

Out of those only GIMP is free. There are other free digital-scrapbooking programs, however they are quite basic and GIMP allows you to manipulate your images/objects in much more detail.

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are very similar, basically Elements is a cut-down simpler version of Photoshop, most tutorials can be used for either one just sometimes the tools are in a slightly different place.

2. Learn how to use your program.

It does take time to learn how to use just one of these programs but once you've got the hang of it, digi-scrappin' becomes easy and you end up with almost endless possibilities for your layouts, providing you have the creativity of course.

What you should learn to do in your program:

What all the tools are in your program - even if you don't fully understand how they work, just know what they do.
How to use layers and layer effects
How to select objects and parts of photos
How to remove red eyes
How to blend layers
How to use masks
How to enhance your photos - i.e. changing to black and white, sepia, etc.
How to install different brush shapes
How to use overlays
How to use styles, patterns and textures

Not everything on this list is a must but it will help you to create some stunning layouts.

If you get stuck with an idea of what you want to do but can't figure it out, just google what you are trying to do. For example, I googled "how to add sparkles to a photo" and found this tutorial Photoshop Sparkles: Add A Sparkle Trail To A Photo

3. Get your scrapbook kits.
Scrapbook kits have all the elements and backgrounds for your page. There are many available on the web (just google "free scrapbook kit") but here are some of my favourites:

4. Get some inspiration.

Again, there are many online galleries but you only need to have a look at one or two to get some ideas. Think about what photos you'd like to use, colours, layout, effects, text and journals.

5. Create your first (of many) pages.

Just a note on page sizes - all kits have different sized backgrounds, to get these to fit properly it is best to scale down and cut a bit off than to distort to fit your page.

For pages that you wish to only display on the computer/internet you can get away with a smallish sized layout. The most commonly used is 600x600 pixels (about 5.08cm square). I like to keep the resolution at 300dpi so the photos stay sharp and detailed. The benefits of having a smaller page is that they are quicker to load and work on and can easily be uploaded to the internet. For computer pages, save your files as .jpeg or .jpg

For pages that you wish to print use 2480x2480 pixels (about 21cm square) with at least 300dpi. This will ensure that you get a quality print however they are slower to load and work on, if you wished to upload to the internet they will also need to be resized as they end up with quite a large file size. For printing, save your files as a .tiff or .tif

So quickly again for page sizes:

Computer/Internet Pages - 600x600 pixels, 300dpi or less resolution
Printing Pages - 2480x2480 pixels, at least 300dpi resolution

Start out with a couple of practice layouts and aim to use what you've learned to get the hang of it. If you look back at my very first layouts you will see that I've just managed to put the elements on the page, then they slowly progress to using masks and more advanced techniques.

6. Share your layouts.
You can share your layouts online (in one of the galleries above, on your blog, Facebook, etc) or you can print them and place them in an album to keep.

Just a note on printing - because most print shops only print photo sizes some parts of your layouts may be cut off or get squished. I haven't actually attempted to print any of my layouts professionally yet (only at home) but I have heard very good things about photobook.co.nz. They do a photobook that is specifically for square scrap pages which means they don't get squished or cut-off (unlike other online photobooks). I am in the process of creating Miss Poppet's First Year photobook with them so will let you know how it turns out.

OK, so that's it for now!

This was just quickly done as I know there are some people keen to get started. I will update when I think of more things to add and will look at adding some examples too.

Nesting much?

I've had a burst of energy today, feel like I need to get things organised around the house. So far, I've done washing and sorted through my clothes to find ones that should still (hopefully) fit, sorted the pantry, sorted our room and moved the alcohol cupboard up high (I caught Miss Poppet with the lid of the jagermeister the other day, eek!) There's still lots on my list to do...

I had a bit of an awwww moment before. Miss Poppet was becoming super cranky so we had a cuddle for her morning nap. She drifted off while I sat with her in the chair then I could feel Huhu#2 moving rolling in my tummy, giving Miss Poppet a couple of kicks too. It made me feel all warm and cozy having my two babies together for a cuddle.

Perhaps Captain Awesome is nesting too? He's just ripped up an overgrown garden and replanted it, it looks fantastic! He plans on doing more around the yard too...I can't wait for my vege & herb garden!

Towel Wrap/Dress Tutorial

These wraps are fantastic for the summer months, a nice little cover-up that dries of your littlies on the beach (or by the pool) and keeps them warmish until they get changed.

This isn't a new idea but I like to do things my own way even though I'm not an expert sewer. I also did a couple of preggi-brain things while sewing together my wrap but I've corrected them while writing this so please read the instructions as well as looking at the pictures. Excuse the bad lighting in some of them, that's what you get for sewing late at night :0P

If you do make one, please let me know what you think of this tutorial as it's my very first sewing one! And I'd love to see your own creations too.

Get prepared...

First up, get some basic measurements for the sizing of the wrap.
1. Measure around your child under the armpits - this is the chest measurement. For my 15 month old she is 54cms or if your not sure, try using the Pumpkin Patch sizing guide (but note that their clothes do tend to be on the smaller side).

2. Measure the length against your child for how long you would like it. I've made mine 45cm long.

You will need:

A nice fluffy towel (mine is from the warehouse for $8.99)
1 fat quarter of cotton fabric (I got mine from Sew Addictive Fabrics)
Elastic cut to your chest measurement + 2cm
Snaps or Velcro

Cut your pieces:
Please note: All seams are 1/4 inch - if you want to use bigger seams you'll need to adjust the sizing.

Cut your towel into a rectangle 70cm x 45cm (chest measurement+16cm x length) If you would like the towel to wrap right around, make this much wider, say add 30cm instead of 16cm - you'll need to adjust the top panel width also.
For the front straps, cut 4 rectangles 3cm x 20cm.
For the back straps, cut 4 rectangles 3cm x 5cm.
For the binding, cut 1 rectangle 3cm x 50cm (3cm x length+5cm)
For the top panel, cut 1 rectangle 7cm x 75cm (7cm x chest measurement+25cm). As my 1/4 yard of material wasn't long enough I cut 2 pieces and I'll sew them together later.

Get Sewing...

Sew your straps.
1. Match up the pieces by placing the wrong sides together then sew down the sides leaving one short edge open (start on a long edge). Do this for all 4 straps.

2. Turn inside out using a pencil or chopstick or something similar. Some patience may be required for this bit!

3. Iron the straps flat then place the straps aside for later.

Bind the short side of the towel.
1. Take your binding piece and iron one short edge back about 3cm, have it facing wrong side up when you iron.

2. Place the wrong side against the short raw side of the towel (if your towel has a wrong side make sure they're both wrong sides together). Match the edges up making sure the fold in the previous step lines up with the bottom finished edge of the towel, pin, then sew down the binding along the top edge.

3. Fold the binding up so that the right side shows and iron flat.

4. Turn the towel over again so the wrong side is showing. Trim the other short side of the binding.

5. Iron up a 1/4 inch seam on the other long side of the binding.

6. Now on the end which we folded up the short side, trim it into a triangle shape like so...

7. Then fold it back over the towel and hold in place while you fold the binding up over the towel so the right side is facing and the ironed edge is folded under. Pin into place. Continue folding the binding up over the towel and pinning.

8. Top stitch the binding down - this side becomes the 'right' side of the towel wrap.

Sew your straps and top panel to the towel.
1. Make sure you've got the wrong side of the towel (this will be the side without the top stitching on the binding). Measure in about 8cm from the finished side of the towel and pin one of the front straps - make sure the strap goes a little bit above the raw edge of the towel (some of my photos don't show this).

On the binded side of the towel, measure in 24cm and pin one of the back straps.

2. Fold the towel over like how you would wrap it around the child - there should be an overhang of about 16cm. Mark this with a pin further down from the edge. This just helps you to remember how far it needs to fold over while you are pinning the other straps.

3. Now pin the other straps opposite their partner, they should all be pinned on the wrong side of the towel. So opposite this back strap, I'm going to pin a front strap.

I'll pin it to the other side about here...

When you're done it should look like so...except your straps will be poking above the edge of the towel a little bit...

4. If you need to sew together your top panel pieces do this now - place wrong sides together and sew the short sides. Iron the seams out flat.

5. Iron up about 2.5cm (like we did with the binding) on both of the short sides.

6. Place the wrong side of the top panel down on the towel covering the straps.

7. Match up the edges up making sure the folds in the previous step lines up with the side edges of the towel, pin into place along the top edge.

8. Sew along the edges, doing a couple of back stitches over the straps to secure them.

9. Fold up the top panel so that the right side is facing up. Iron flat.

10. Turn the towel over so the wrong side is facing up again. Iron a 1/4 inch seam like we did for the binding (sorry I forgot to get a photo of this).

Attach the elastic.
1. Lay the elastic along the top raw edge of the towel on the wrong side.

From now on you may wish to change your bobbin to use a colour that matches your towel. I didn't bother as the fluffiness of the towel hides a lot of the stitching.

2. Pin one end of your elastic down and sew it in place - do a few backstitches to make sure it is well secured.

3. Stretch the elastic down to the other side of the towel and pin in place then sew like above.

4. You may want to do a tack in the middle of the elastic to stop it from twisting in the wash.

Finish of the top panel.
1. With the ironed side edges fold them back over the towel and hold in place while you fold the top panel down over the raw edge of the towel and elastic. The right side should be facing and the ironed seam folded under. Pin into place.

2. Continue folding the top panel down over the raw edge of the towel and elastic, folding under the seam we ironed and pinning into place. You will need to stretch the elastic toweling edge a little bit to get the top panel to sit flat while you pin.

3. Top stitch the 3 sides of the top panel down, starting on one of the short sides. (Remember to make sure you haven't gotten the straps tangled in what you are sewing).

Attach your snaps.
You can get the snap tool and snaps from Spotlight or most craft/sewing stores around. You may wish to try the wrap on your child to check how long the straps should be and the best place to attach the front snap to hold the wrap together.

1. Fold the towel how you would wrap it on the child and line up the straps so they sit flat. Attach one snap to each strap (make sure you get the snaps the right way around too) and one snap on the front to hold the wrap together.

On the longer back straps (mine are shorties), you could place 2 snaps and space them about 3cm apart to allow for growth.

Alternatively....
For the straps, you could make one buttonhole on each back strap. Then to complete the straps, thread the front strap through the buttonhole and tie a knot.

For the front snap, you could sew on a piece of velcro instead. I choose snaps because they are quick and easy to attach and my little one can't undo them!

And ta-daa, you're finished!

Not the greatest picture to show it off but it's so hard to get her sit still! I was supposed to get a picture at swimming today but wet baby + wet mummy + camera isn't a good mix.

As this wrap is made to just fit Miss Poppet, it does have a bit of a gap when she sits down, but this does allow her more freedom of movement too.

I have some time to catch up on posts as Miss Poppet still isn't herself after being sick, just lazing around on the couch napping really. She's still been quite grizzly too and not eating a lot, she even doesn't want to play or go outside or do any of her favourite things. She took me by surprise and was sick all through her cot again yesterday afternoon, just when I thought it was all over. I ended up calling Plunketline (what a fantastic service by the way, they never make you feel like a over-paranoid mother) who said she could be lethargic for up to 2 weeks after being sick. My gosh, I hope she recovers quicker than that!!!

Anyway, onto my sewing. I've been on a bit of a fabric buying spree from Sew Addictive Fabrics on Facebook. It's all so gorgeous I can't help myself!

(Look she's walking! Although walking has gone out the window since she's been sick so hopefully she'll continue once she's better.)

This another round neck dress but I made it with ties instead of buttons and a larger A-line dress part so she doesn't outgrow it so quick.

This is an apron style dress which I found a great tutorial from Everyday Chaos. I made some changes to it, instead of a rectangle I made more of an A-line dress part and as I use french seams to keep it tidy I made my own bias binding to finish the armholes. I also added some lace to the bottom of the yoke, this was actually to hide the stitching from the back yoke piece - if I were to make another I'd make the back yoke piece larger as it just wouldn't come down enough to cover the front seam of the yoke to make it look top-stitched (and provide a tidy finish).

I really love how this dress turned out, it is so summery and almost dressy. It actually started out as a peasant style top but I found after cutting the first piece I wouldn't quite have enough material to make the whole top - whoops! I'll blame that on pregnesia.

I came across that the other day - it's so me.

Pregnesia - noun [preg - nee - zhuh]

Definition: short term memory loss, forgetfulness, absentmindedness, inability to complete simple functions correctly (eg milk into pantry rather than fridge) caused by growing another human.

Time frame: Indefinite. Long term.

Cousins

Miss Poppet just adores her older cousin Miss Moo, she follows her around and always wants to do what she is doing. The other day we managed to get a snap of them riding the rocking horse together, so cute! Unfortunately, the lighting wasn't ideal where the rocking horse is located, but this photo is still one of my favs! I hope that as they grow up together they still remain so close.

Plan aborted

Well, the plan today was to walk down to Music and Movement, take some photos of my daughter, niece and friends, have a lovely shared lunch with the family and perhaps catch up on the washing this afternoon.

Instead I woke up to Captain Awesome handing me Miss Poppet saying "I think she's spewed in her cot, I've got to go to work". Sure enough, upon closer inspection there is vomit all through her cot (along with the peas and chicken from dinner the night before) and to prove it wasn't just a once off my poor baby starts vomiting again.

At the moment she is taking a peaceful nap on the couch and I keep having to shoo the cat away cos he just wants to cuddle up too - I don't blame him, it's raining here so it's the perfect day for cuddling on the couch, even if it smells. Thank god, my morning sickness has gone!

So here's what I've been doing the last few weeks.... lots and lots of SEWING! I really do wish I had more time in the day to fit in all my crafty projects, I used to use my daughter's nap-time to get into them but lately I've been having a snooze myself (growing babies really takes it out of me). Here's a few projects to feast your eyes on:

Ruffled nappy cover for my niece - after I made a pattern and figured out how to make one of these I found a great tutorial and pattern on Prudent Baby so now I'll be sure to google before I start to make!

Round neck dress - I love love love this dress, my daughter had a massive growth spurt and only wore it once though! Perhaps if the next Huhu is a girl she will get lots more wear out of it.

My crochet roll is made out of leftover bits from my stash, the outside is a completely different fabric. I've wanted one of these for aaaages and finally got around to making one. It's excellent to keep all my bits and pieces handy, my hooks organised and easy to roll up and sneak into the handbag for those crocheting opportunities while out and about. I may eventually get around to doing a tutorial on how to make one of these too.

Made for my niece, a gorgeous little dress and skirt, I should be getting good at these by now!

Well, there is actually loads more photos to load of my sewing BUT had a Playcentre meeting tonight which went a bit longer than I thought it would. Should really be off to bed now and re-coop for music and movement tomorrow...so TBC again!

Gosh, I know I keep saying this but I've been busy lately... done heaps of sewing, some crochet, did a couple of websites (E-Weez and Wild Daisy Flowers), started baby's blankie (yup, we have another Huhu on the way) as well as keeping busy with baby groups and Plunket stuff.

Finally have finished Miss Poppet's photo scrapbook of her first year - now I'm not too sure if I should keep going or not? What do you think?

Crochet & Other Things

So, I thought I would extend this blog to all things crafty that I do.

My Mum and Grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 11, I started off making a blanket which to this day is still stashed away unfinished. The arrival of my niece brought forth a newfound passion for the craft and I lovingly made her a baby blanket after re-learning how to crochet with the help of google and you tube. Lately I've been busy making some cute accessories for my baby girl and some items for the local markets...that is the ones that don't get snuffled up by family first! I doubt that first blanket will ever get finished.

I also made the little red dress!

I'm also lucky to have a Grandmother that sews!! I don't quite have the knack for it that she does but I do OK. I will admit, I was hoping to have a boy first so any further children could have a 'big brother' to look out for them, but little girls are just so much fun! My sewing machine is being put to good use and I'm looking forward to summer so I can make her even more dresses.

This is a bit of a catch-up post as I've been quite busy this last month! I never thought that being a Mum would make you more sociable than when you were working with all the playgroups, coffee groups, committee meetings, toy library duties and other baby activities!

I am still amazed that our girl has blue eyes! I think they're more blue-grey but still amazing from two grey-eyed parents - it's the strong O'(for Irish/English) family genes coming out :0P

Our girl is nearly 1 and I still haven't finished her photo scrapbook! Her birthday isn't far off now so I will need to try and finish it before she is 1 year old. The kit 'Doors to my World' reminds me of a botanical garden, another flirty kit. Get it at Cool Scrap Digital.

Miss Poppet's Christening

Well, we finally christened our girl, it only took 7 months to organise ;0) It was a very special day with family and friends and Miss Poppet looked beautiful in the dress her Great-Grandma made.
My FIL brought a new flashy camera to take lots and lots of photos of the grandkids - it takes some excellent shots! And so it should for 7MB a photo -our 500GB harddrive won't last long with the amount of photos we've been taking. I love these photos of my girl and still can't get over how quickly she is growing up.

How to Install a Blog Kit

First off, you need to download the blog kit you wish to use, edit the text if necessary then upload somewhere online for linking the image to your blog. I recommend using Photobucket as it doesn’t shrink the images. (Tip: Check your Photobucket options – see below for more info)

For more detailed instructions...keep reading. We’ll go through it step by step.

These instructions are specific to Photobucket and Blogspot/Blogger.

Download the blog kit you wish to use (see my free blog kits). Edit and add text to the header or blank tag if you wish (using GIMP, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc).

Upload to Photobucket.

Make sure you check the More Options first and choose 1 megabyte file size and click Save.

If you need further instructions for uploading to Photobucket, see them in my How to upload images to Photobucket tutorial.

How to Install A Background on Blogspot/Blogger

I suggest you backup your blog before proceeding (download the full template to do this). Also, make sure you have chosen what template you wish to use for text/colours as if you change your template later on it will change the background images too.

Before you start, I also recommend creating a Notepad or Word document with all the links of the images that you want to use.

Under Edit Template you’ll need to scroll down a little bit until you find

We’re looking for the bit that says

Or something else may be after background: - that’s OK.

You want to change it so that it uses your link. So using my background example link above (remember I copied this earlier into a Word document)

My HTML will now look like this:

background: url(http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ac222/misc/background.jpg) no-repeat center fixed #FFFFFF;

You can click the preview button to see if it looks OK, but make sure you click on Save Template to save the changes!

How to Install A Header on Blogspot/Blogger

From your Dashboard go to Layout (or click Customise from your blog) then Page Elements

Right at the top under NavBar will be the header, click on Edit.

Under Placement, untick shrink to fit and choose Instead of title and description.

Under Image click on From the web and paste in the link to your header image.

Once it’s done click Save which will take it back to the main Page Elements page.

Click Save at the top right of your screen to save the changes.

How to Install Tags on Blogspot/Blogger

From your Dashboard go to Layout (or click Customise from your blog) then Page Elements.

Click on Add a Gadget where you want to add the tag.

Scroll down (on the Basics tab) until you find Picture, click on the plus to add an image.

Anything added as the Title will show as text on your blog, so if you just want the image to show don’t add anything here.

Under Image untick shrink to fit.

Choose From the web and paste in the link to your tag image.

Once it’s done click Save which will take it back to the main Page Elements page.

It will add the image to the top of the gadget box on the Page Elements page. You can change the order by dragging the image to where you want it.

Click Save at the top right of your screen to save the changes.

How to Upload Images to Photobucket

Go to http://photobucket.com/ if you already have an account sign in, otherwise you’ll need to create an account.

Once you are signed in, upload the blog kit images you wish to use. You’ll find the option to do this under My Home.

Make sure you check the More Options first and choose 1 megabyte file size and click Save.

As we are uploading more than one file, I suggest using the bulk uploader.

You’ll get a security warning, you’ll need to allow this for the uploader to work.

The uploader will look something like this.

Click on the image thumbnail to select the images then click on Upload.

You can enter a title for each image if you wish – this may help later on.

Click where it says add a title to do this.

Once they have been uploaded click on Save and share now (at the bottom of the screen)

Under each image you will find something called a direct link. This is what you need to copy for your blog.

For the image you want click where it says http://... and it will select the text ready for you to copy.

I suggest creating a document in Word or notepad and copying all the links you need to it.

During the lunch break of our antenatal class, my hubby and I went for a looksie in some shops. We came across a large Lion teddy which can unfold into a large cushion. He immediately reminded me of my beloved 'Herbie' (a homemade lion teddy, which my Mum had to throw away because the stuffing aggravated her asthma)...so we ended up getting it for Miss Poppet and now we have a 'Herbie Junior'. He's awesome and Miss Poppet seems to like him too.

The Beginning.

I'm totally addicted to scrapbooking. Not so long ago I was just a beginner and now on the creative team for the lovely Pasko. Time to start a blog.
I'll be backloading a few designs first, then the latest ones will follow. You'll also find some useful scrappin' sites I come across. I plan to sink my teeth into design when I get some spare time (a bit hard with a baby).. so keep an eye out for my own 'Kreation Kits' coming soon.

This blog will also be run in conjunction with eGo Designz. Please note that on this site (eGo Designz) there are samples that were made for friends so aren't able to be sold (as the kits used are personal use only).
